TELL A EAR
I created a public art installation in my community during the Summer of 2022. I would always pass an abandoned payphone while going to my local corner store. I created an interactive, ongoing project to ask my community a question and have them respond to the question anonymously. My goal was to provide a positive place to vent, so I fashioned the abandoned payphone into an ear which would collect the responses to a question that was printed on both sides of the payphone.
MASKS WITH MASKS
During the pandemic when everyone started wearing masks, I was very upset and saddened that I could not see people’s smiles anymore. I decided to make surgical masks with smiles on them and put them on masks to spread more happiness during these uncertain times.
SOCIAL BUTTERFLY
The creation of my Social Butterfly sculpture involved a mannequin head, two LED lights, and four broken phones. I first came up with the idea when I came across four discarded broken phones during a Covid cleaning of the house. The image of a cell phone creates a powerful yet familiar feeling that anyone can relate to. I knew I wanted to use these phones in a way that shows the power and addictive nature of the device. Later on, while rummaging through a close-out sale at a local discount store, a mannequin head stood out to me and I thought it could be used for a potential art piece. I then combined the two unrelated items into something both useful and meaningful. By planting the cell phones into the mannequin's head and illuminating the eyes, it looks like the powersource is coming from the phones, making a visual representation of the way social media influences our perception. The combination of powerful technology and an organic being represented by the mannequin head presents an effect of a modified human with supernatural insight brought to life by the bright beams of light. The end result is an interesting conversation piece that also can light up any room.
